What to Eat

Naga is well known for their food that is cooked in “gata” or coconut milk.  The province is blessed with a lot of coconut trees and one would notice that almost all their dishes are cooked in coconut milk.

Here are some common foods you'll see when you hang in the streets of Naga :)

Laing. One of the famous Bicolano dishes to try is “Laing” or “gabi”. These are taro leaves that are air dried first, hung upside down to drain the water fast from the leaves, then after drying the leaves for a few days, chopped into small pieces and cooked in coconut leaves and chili pepper.

Bicol Express. A dish which was named after a passenger train from Manila to Bicol. They named the dish Bicol Express because eating the dish will make you run like a train to look for water to drink. Bicol express is made up of pork cooked in coconut milk and spiced with lots and lots of red hot chili.

Puto with bucayo. They are small rice cakes with candied grated coconut filling, prepared right in front of your eyes.

Kinalas. A Nagueño noodle soup dish with fine strips or small chunks of meat from boiled cow’s head that has been boiled until super tender.

Baduya. A piece of baduya is composed of 3 or more slices of banana skewered with bamboo stick, dipped in rice flour batter and deep fried.

Balisoso.

A triangle shaped delicacy made of cassava flour wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.
